Cannabis in University Residences
Most university residences in Ontario, including Western University and Fanshawe College, prohibit cannabis use and possession on their premises. This applies to smoking, vaping, and edibles in dorm rooms.
This is a policy decision by the university, not a law. Cannabis is legal for adults 19+ in Ontario, but universities can set their own rules for campus-owned housing. Check your specific residence agreement for details.
Violations of residence cannabis policies can result in warnings, fines, or loss of housing depending on the institution.
Cannabis in Off-Campus Apartments and Rentals
Off-campus housing follows Ontario's standard cannabis laws, which are more permissive.
Smoking cannabis is permitted anywhere tobacco smoking is allowed. However, your lease may contain smoking restrictions that apply to cannabis as well. Many London apartments have gone smoke-free, which includes cannabis smoke.
Landlords cannot specifically prohibit cannabis consumption (it's legal) but they can prohibit smoking in general. Edibles, oils, and capsules are consumed without smoking and are typically not affected by smoke-free policies.
If you're in a shared apartment, be considerate of roommates. Cannabis odor can be strong and not everyone appreciates it.
