Ontario Cannabis Laws
Here are the key cannabis laws every Ontario consumer should know.
- Legal age: You must be 19 or older to purchase, possess, or consume cannabis in Ontario.
- Possession limit: You can carry up to 30 grams of dried cannabis (or equivalent) in public.
- Where you can consume: Cannabis can be consumed where tobacco smoking is permitted. Not in enclosed public places, workplaces, schools, hospitals, playgrounds, or vehicles.
- Home growing: You can grow up to 4 cannabis plants per household (not per person) for personal use.
- Purchasing: Legal cannabis can only be purchased from licensed retailers (like Cannabis Link) or the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) website.
Driving and Cannabis
Ontario has strict laws about cannabis-impaired driving.
Zero tolerance for drivers under 21, novice drivers (G1, G2, M1, M2), and commercial vehicle drivers. Any detectable amount of THC is illegal.
For fully licensed drivers 21+, penalties range from license suspension to criminal charges depending on THC blood levels.
There is no "safe" amount of THC for driving. Cannabis impairs reaction time, judgment, and coordination. Never drive after consuming cannabis. Use a taxi, rideshare, or designated driver.
Safe Storage
Proper storage protects your cannabis and the people around you.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV light degrades cannabinoids.
- Use airtight containers. Mason jars are ideal.
- Keep cannabis locked and away from children and pets. Edibles especially look like regular candy.
- Store edibles in their original child-resistant packaging.
- Don't store cannabis in your car — it's illegal to have accessible cannabis while driving.
Harm Reduction
Cannabis is generally well-tolerated, but these practices minimize risk.
Start with low doses, especially with edibles. Don't mix cannabis with alcohol — the combination amplifies both. Stay hydrated. Don't consume cannabis if pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you feel uncomfortably high: find a calm space, drink water, eat something light, breathe slowly. Remind yourself the feeling is temporary. CBD oil can help moderate THC effects.
All products sold at Cannabis Link are from Health Canada-licensed producers, tested for THC/CBD accuracy, pesticides, heavy metals, and microbial contaminants.
