How to Evaluate Flower Quality
Not all cannabis flower is created equal. Here's what to look for when evaluating quality.
- Trichome coverage — Look for frosty, crystal-covered buds. Trichomes contain the cannabinoids and terpenes.
- Bud structure — Dense, well-trimmed buds indicate careful cultivation. Loose, airy buds often have lower potency.
- Aroma — Strong, distinct aroma means the terpene profile is intact. Weak or hay-like smell may indicate poor curing.
- Colour — Vibrant greens, purples, and oranges indicate freshness. Brown or yellow buds may be old or poorly stored.
- Moisture — Buds should be slightly sticky but not wet. Too dry means harsh smoke. Too wet means potential mold.
How to Consume Flower
Joints and pre-rolls are the most popular method. Ground flower is rolled in paper and smoked. Pre-rolls come ready to smoke.
Pipes and bongs filter smoke through water (bongs) or deliver it directly (pipes). Both offer quick, potent hits.
Dry herb vaporizers heat flower to 180-220°C, releasing cannabinoids without combustion. This preserves terpene flavour and reduces harsh byproducts compared to smoking.
For beginners, pre-rolls are the easiest entry point. For flavour chasers, dry herb vaporizers offer the best terpene experience.
How to Store Cannabis Flower
Proper storage preserves potency, flavour, and freshness.
Store in an airtight glass jar (Mason jars work perfectly) in a cool, dark place. Ideal temperature is 15-21°C. Avoid direct sunlight, which degrades cannabinoids.
Don't store in plastic bags long-term. Static from plastic can strip trichomes off the buds.
Properly stored flower stays fresh for 6-12 months. After that, THC slowly converts to CBN (a mildly sedating cannabinoid), and terpenes evaporate.
